God, today is a good day!
Jun. 13th, 2006 12:37 pmSo I have come to terms with it and I most likely will not pass Math 151, but I am going to still give it the old college try. I have also come to except that there is no way in hell I will ever finish my one hundred novels in the allotted time. So that project is kaput. But I will however keep up with me list, post a synopsis of all the books I complete, continue to read new suggests that tickle my fancy, and give once in a while posts about what I am reading and the value of literature. And finally, the thing that has made me feel rather jubilant about becoming a librarain....this is what this job is all about!
Three weeks ago a little boy came in and asked me what to read. He told me he liked the Harry Potter books and then with the most serious of faces told me that people keep telling him that the books they gave him were JUST LIKE Harry Potter. But he said they lied. He told me he read Chronicles fo Narnia and it sucked and that he had vowed never, ever to read again, but his mom was taking away his bike for the summer if he didn't read SOMETHING. I laughed and told him that when I was little, I hate reading, too. But then i read The Earthsea Cycle and changed my mind and now I couldn't live without reading. (Seriously I'd probably die!) Then I told him I was going to order him a bunch of different kinds of books, none of them like Harry Potter, so he shouldn't expect that. Each one was very different I told him. Then I talked about the voice of the book with him. How literature feels and tastes different. He was enthralled and promised me that he would read everything I ordered him as long as it wasn't boring. I told him that was okay, because if you couldn't get through a book, you probably just weren't ready for that one. Maybe later you would be, but not now, and that is okay. So I ordered him the Wizard of Earthsea, the Golden Compass, the first volume of the Crestomanci Chronicles, and the first book of the Bartimaeus Trilogy. He came back today beaming, told me those were the best books ever, pretty much said I was his hero, told me I HAD to write a book for him, and proceeded to have an hour long discussion with me about how he hated reading but now doesn't. Truly awesome man, truly awesome. I feel sooooooo good.
