Today I was getting a batch of paperbacks ready to go out on the shelves and I noticed the cover of one in particular. It had a nice feel to it and I could tell just by glancing at the colors on the spine that it was scifi/fantasy. And lo, it was, a Magic the Gathering title to be precise.
It has been almost twelve years since I've read a Magic the Gathering title. I must say, upon picking up Lorwyn: Book 1, I remember exactly why I was drawn to Magic in general. Wizards of the Coast (from now on referred to as Money Sucking Bastards---MSB to be precise)has packaged Magic the Gathering well over the years. The worlds of MTG are definitely very well-rounded, interesting and fiercely beautiful. Plus, those damn cards have some of the best art. I can't remember the number of times I shuffled through my deck looking at the pictures and wanting to know more....and unlike some of the D&D stuff that is being produced, MTG feels mature and thought out, taking worn tropes and creatures and reinventing them in very nice ways. I remember the first time I ever thought a minotaur might be a cool ass creature and that was when I was reading a Magic novel about them (the exact title escapes me, sorry). I loved the Urza Planeswalker stuff and the Phyrexians are one of the scariest races ever (about equal to the Borg in my book)and more importantly, the quality of the writing has always been very, very good for a shared world series. MSB has really, really impressed me with this line. I just wish I could afford to play MTG the card game. It's been twelve years or so since I even shuffled my deck. Magic the Gathering was definitely one of my first experiences of being completely immersed in a mythos and I will, grudgingly, always be grateful to MSB and their artists and writers for that.
Now, I'm very, very behind in what's going on in MTG, however, the world of Lorwyn looks pretty sweet. And as I understand it, there are no humans. Which is intriguing. Here's a link, scroll down and have a looksey at their concept art and the creators' reasons for designing the races as such.
One last note, flamekin are the freaking shit.
Btw, the book, so far is pretty damn good. Now I wanna dig out all my old Magic novels and re-read them.
Also, I know this makes me a huge dork. Can't help what you love....or what you read unsuspecting when you were to little to know any better.
I stand by my opinions of MTG.
