Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
May. 16th, 2009 12:36 pmIs anyone else watching this? Cuz if you aren't, you should.
Here's why:
1. Balsa. Balsa is quite possibly the coolest heroine to have ever graced my TV screen, ever. She's on the same level as Integra as far as sheer badass-ness, but she's not quite so cold and, well, English. She's the cool, quiet hero, the Clint Eastwood of anime. She looks like she could kick ass and does. But she does it in a believable way. So many anime and manga characters, especially females, are over-the-top and totally unbelievable. There isn't anything wrong with this, but every once in awhile I long for real warrior characters, both male and female. Balsa fits the bill. Plus, she's not all about blood and glory. She actaully reminds me a lot of Toshiro Mifune's character in Yojimbo and Sanjuro. There's also this gentleness beneath her steely resolve. And I love it! Absolutely love it.
2. Cranky wizard ladies.
3. Really interesting character relationships. Especially between that of Tanda, the medicine man, and Balsa. All of the characters in this series are really, really well-drawn and beautifully executed.
4. Gorgeous animation and a cool world. Not quite China and not quite Japan with a lot of really cool world-building.
5. Balsa, besides being a cool-ass, spear-weilding chick, is hawt. Really, really hot. I mean it.
6. Cranky wizard ladies, did I mention that?
7. Well done politics. I mean, there are no clear good guys or bad guys, just a bunch of characters trying to do the best they can. The mikado's reasoning for doing what he does and his family's reactions are particularly telling.
8. The one star-reader looks the Sephiroth. Nuff said.
