WELCOME TO THROUGH THE HORN GATE—DARKELF105’S ONLINE BOOK CLUB

I have started this book club in an attempt to facilitate intelligent discussion, analysis and synthesis of my favorite things in the world—books. I hope to achieve a dialogue between members that will help to broaden all of our literary horizons as wells as to discuss the selected works. This book club was started with the idea of the woman reader in mind, but everyone, and that means males, is welcome! I have also chosen to restrain my selections to works of “imaginative fiction”, known commonly as “science fiction” and “fantasy”, because those are the works and genres that I am most familiar with, but also because I feel that science fiction and fantasy have been given a bum rap, and their versatile literary functions have been ignored. This, I also hope to correct this stigma by choosing works that are exemplary, seminal, or “literary” in some way. I hope all of you have fun reading and discussing the books I choose!

If all goes according to plan, I hope to have a new book to read and discuss every month, so new book readings will begin the 1st of the month. I will choose books easily available from the CLEVENET system or in a cheap paperback edition.

RULES

I love the open-ended, egalitarian nature of the internet and thus will run this book club in a way that I hope encourages this mode of communication. However, there are some rules that I wish members to follow.

1. Every opinion counts—so be nice! Some of the works I may choose will be controversial or contentious and no matter how another’s opinion (or even the work itself) makes us feel, we are not at liberty to devalue another’s point of view. Therefore, no attacking another member personally. Criticism of the work and each others’ opinions is encourages, but only if it is fair, intelligent, and polite.

2. Please use complete sentences and as proper grammar as possible when posting. I am no English major, so don’t feel you must drag out a handbook every time you wish to post something, but be aware that online, your writing is the only representation of you we have. Using internet style speak (e.g. not capitalizing, using u for you, or complete sentences) takes away from what you have to say and will detract from your post, no matter how good the initial thought or idea.

3. Try to be as specific as possible when referencing the book. Page numbers will help all of us immensely, so if you quote or use and example from the book, please put the page number with it as well.

4. If you are going to mark something that is clearly ahead in the novel, please mark your post as a SPOILER.

5. No swearing.

Since this book club is definitely a test run and I have never done anything like it before, your thought, quirks, queries, questions, and concerns, as well as your suggestions, are always welcome! Just email them to me as opposed to posting on my LJ.

Lastly, I hope you enjoy yourselves, and if you ever feel like you cannot finish a selection, for whatever reason, don’t worry about it. Part of being a mature adult reader is being able to put down a book that is not working for you. Just try again next month.

I have posted...I was supposed to right?

Looking foward to reading some of these books, or at least trying to.

Yeah, I guess I should have made that clearer. Commenting on this post is okay, I just didn't want the dicussion boards to clog with stuff that was unrelated to the, well discussions, that we should be starting like Wednesday. I hope. No one but you has checked in.

It's okay, I was just curious who was reading and ready to start discussions and who wasn't. I will post the first discussion topic on Wednesday or Thursday. :)
