I just finished volumes one and two of Samurai Deeper Kyo the other day. I am not sure how how I feel about this series. On the one hand, all the fanservice makes it awkward. Am not a fan of random boob grabbing, it makes me deeply uncomfortable. I've had it happen to me once and I totally get turned off whenever I see it. That being said though, I adore, absolutely adore Yuya. I mean, I love her. I'm also pretty fond of Kyoshiro because dopey guys make me smile. Not much of a fan of Kyo, though, but I suspect he may grow on me. That being said, I've heard good things about the series from [livejournal.com profile] calliopepurple and I trust his judgment. I was told that it's character driven and the characters are all pretty awesome, so I'm going to go with that and get the next few volumes. Red Tiger? The assassin guy?, he seems like he is made of awesome. And I really, really like cantankerous old women, so yanno, I'm willing to keep going despite the overwhelming shonen of the series.

Anybody else read this one? Thoughts? Encouragement?

Yuya is awesome and one of my favorites ever. I always get sad when people don't like her. Ditto for Okuni and a character who I think shows up around vol 4. Kyo and the boob grabbing get better once you realize that it's the equivalent of his pulling pigtails on the playground in kindergarten. (It's also offset before long by a rather interesting and sometimes overwhelming bit of protectiveness that manages to not segue into overprotectiveness.)

Benitora is also awesome. The fanfavorite shows up next volume. I'm not as big on him as others, and don't think I've seen you tal about the character type much. But right after that 2 other favorites of mine show up.

I think a lot of the fanservice and boob grabbing, though, is largely a 90s shounen thing, rather like how you get panties obsessions and comments on boob sizes in a lot of other series.

Then I am heartened and fortified and am looking forward to the next six volumes arriving at the library. I did like Okuni, too. In fact, except for Kyo..who kinda wasn't in it enough to have any sort of character development, I pretty much liked/ and or was interested in every character that showed up with a name.

Eventually, if I love the story/characters enough, fanservice sort of disappears into the background and I ignore it, so it's good to know that it developes into something less gratuitous.

How is the anime? Have you seen it?

I think that, initially, Kyo was more meant to be a bit of an antagonist/something to be dealt with and an extreme version of the shounen hero, but peopleresponded to him well, so he developed into more of a character. He starts coming into his own when peoplefrom his past start showing up around vol 4. (One of them might show up in vol 3. I'm not sure.)

The fan service starts to be reduced a good bit somewhere in the teens, to the point where a lot of us got surprised by a couple bits in the late 20s, even though it wasn't as much as these early volumes. (Though we could have just been surprised that it was Yuya fanservice that wasn't a direct result of something Kyo did.)

The anime was actually one of the first ones I watched. It has great nostalgic value for me, but I'm not sure how much I'd like it if I first watched it now.

Wooow, fancy seeing you here. I've used some of your SDK icons for RP accounts and just abused your tags to find the Yukimura stuff, which will be awesome because I'm playing him right now!

Hi! I've probably seen you around. Your name is familiar. I can always make Yukimura iconns if you want. I actually have my favorite Yukimura scene at my LJ somewhere, since he has such powerful "win people over to SDK powers." (Unfortunately, I don't think Kamijyo was always sure what to do with him after that, in as major as role as he had, at least, but that's another topic.)

Oooh, more Yukimura would be awesome ♥. The ones I've got for him right now are here, and there's nothing there from his backstory.

Do you mind if I friend you?

Yay! Benitora is awesome on a plate, and the fanservice never really bothered me. I guess because I'm secretly a teenage pervert? My favorite characters are Okuni, Yukimura, and Akira, all of whom will come into their own as developed characters, although in Akira's case it takes a very, very long time. It's ridiculously shounen and that's probably why I love it so much - I need something that uplifting and friendship centric once in a while.

Hooray! See, I told you I trust your judgment. Although fanservice annoys me (although I would use a word that was a little less strong, I just can't think of one) I can read past it. Lol, you might just be a teenage perv! But a charming one, I suppose :). Also, stuff centered around friendship really makes my day, so now I am super excited. Especially because there is soooooo much of this series. It's like hitting gold.
