Speaking of books and fail...
Feb. 19th, 2009 05:15 pmI started The Alchymst by Scott Michael. I actually bought this because I was told that John Dee and Machiavelli are both villains. In premise, this is sweet, in execution the novel is pretty cardboard with empty characterizations and almost nothing cool to recommend it. Although, magic having distinct smells is pretty awesome. I haven't finished this because I found it lackluster, but before I give up on it and donate it to the library, anyone else read it?
Thoughts? Encouragement?
I am lemming, I follow where people I like go, after all.

on 2009-02-19 11:26 pm (UTC)I just finished The Icarus Girl, which was amazing, and which I found out after reading it that the author wasn't even 19 when she wrote it. I am dumbfounded.

on 2009-02-19 11:47 pm (UTC)John Dee so far hasn't been in the book long enough to make me happy...and the main characters are kinda boring. Although Flamel's wife is pretty sweet...then she got kidnapped. I hate it when powerful, awesome older women are kindnapped. I think maybe that's why I'm so cranky with this book...but, on the other hand, Machiavelli and John Dee are bad guys! And Michael Scott seems to be playing with all kinds of myths and legends. Like the Witch of Endor and Bastet and and....hmmmmmm, maybe I will keep going.
Also, people need to take their talent and shove it. Peter S. Beagle wrote A Fine and Private Place when he was nineteen. It's not fair. Not at all.
