Good Book to Read
Aug. 18th, 2006 02:04 pmI finished "Bridge of Birds" yesterday and I must say that book was absolutely gorgeous and so much fun. I am for a book whose best character is elderly but not stereotypical and whose muscle man is named Number Ten Ox and besides being muscular is also civil, polite, and observant. I am for a book where the main characters would like to be reincarnated as clouds, trees and three-toed sloths and whose main character introduces himself as "My surname is Li and my personal name is Kao and I have a slight flaw in my character." I love the over-the-top historical anonchronisms and the cultural faux pas as well as the apparent love the author has for Chinese myth and sensibilities. There are so many bits of truly beautiful and wonderful writing in this book (one of my favorites is the informant they find that "has gossip written all over her") and my absolute favorite part of this novel was the "most beautiful goddess in heaven" and the favorite goddess of the August Personage of Jade was an unselfish, plain, happy-go-lucky, sensible, kind peasant girl, whose best feature was a smile so bright and happy, viewing it was like a punch in the gut. I loved Lotus Cloud and truly wished more of the book had focused on her. However, Master Li and Number Ten Ox are now two of my favorite characters, ever. I hope if anyone reads this post they do themselves a favor and go pick this novel up. Finding it may be hard (I heard that it was, undeservedly, out-of-print)but it is but well worth the trouble.
