Dead Until Dark, Charlaine Harris
Jan. 27th, 2010 12:20 pmI finished Dead Until Dark last night when I couldn't fall asleep due to Plato's Parmenides running through my head. Needless to say, Plato's Dialogues do not make good before bed reading as they tend to turn my brain on and Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire novels do.
I was reluctant to jump on this bandwagon, but I really, really liked True Blood, mostly because I can get behind anything with Anna Paquin in it and, well, the men of the show are GORGEOUS (it has lots of narrative problems, however, and is in general RIDICULOUS, but I think the writers know that and are resigned to making it as silly and campy as possible). I also know several smart and sassy ladies who love the books and when my boss told me she also enjoyed them, I caved.
I have to say, despite being so over sexy vampires, I enjoyed this. Harris' world is flirty and funny, and just a little bit dark and edgy, as well as dangerous. I do not particularly care for Bill, but then I never thought a predator/prey relationship would be ideal for romance.
That being said, the books are raunchy and laught-out-loud funny and Sookie's voice is unusual, sassy and distinct. I very, very much like Sookie and I am thrilled that there are more books and that she will be the narrator.
