So I just finished volume one of Tite Kubo's Zombie Powder. I must say that I started this series with some trepidation. I read some reviews and words like "subpar", "disjointed" and the killer "I didn't like it" came up. But you know, as I understand it, this is this mangaka's first series, and as such, it's good. I liked it. I liked it alot. I can see where some of the criticism of the series comes from. The main character has a chain saw gun...and well that's just the beginning of all that is ridiculous in this manga. But that leads me to my next point....

I loved it because it IS ridiculous and over-the-top. It reminded me of some fanfic writer's crazed vision of a Cowboy Bebop/Evil Dead cross over. LOVE IT! I mean the main character, Gamma, is an unholy hybrid of Sephiroth, Ash from Army Of Darkness, and David Bowie (as either Ziggy Star Dust or the Goblin King, take your pick). And that is awesome. This book seems to be written in the spirit of all men who never got over being twelve, but because it's so gosh darn EXUBERANT in its execution that I like it. It's written in the same style as R.A. Salvatore's Darkelf Trilogy, so it gets put up there with highly mockable, but only because I love it. I hope the next couple of volumes are as zany. But I think I would keep reading just for C.T. Smith. What is it with me and guys with briefcases? Sven from Black Cat is pretty much the hottest thing ever and, well, it's because he has a magic briefcase.  So in conclusion, read this manga with a grain of salt and a grin. David Bowie AND Sephiroth as one. C'mon, doesn't get much better than that. (And by Sephiroth, I mean the emo one from Kingdom Hearts II not the super psycho/scary one from Advent Children and Final Fantasy VII).

Is Evil Dead the "boomstick" guy?
Yum David Bowie. I am listening to him in "Maigic Dance" right now.

Yup, that's Army of Darkness, too.

That is one of the few non-animated movies I have actually seen.

well, i have been wanting to read something with zombies in it for a while now (um, i'm assuming it does because of the title? i'd feel rather lame if it didn't...)

Unfortunately, no zombies, per se...zombie powder is apparently a substance that can bring the dead back to life or grant immortality. I definitely disappointed with the lack of zombie...but I'm reading a nonfiction work called "The Gospel of Living Dead" and it deals with the myth of the zombie and how zombie myths are kinda like a correlation to the way we live...it's interesting.
