I would just like to make it perfectly clear that I was reading The Road  way before Oprah decided to make it one of her book club books.

I assume by this you mean the book by Cormac McCarthy? And since I don't watch the telly and seldom read the newspaper, when did this great paragon of literature make this recommendation?

That's a shame. Not sure how to explain it, but that book really didn't deserve that fate. Now that she's made it mainstream, critics are going to rip it apart, people are going to try and psychoanalyze it, and make it mean something. As I said previously, I liked the story. His writing style was very interesting.
What scares me is that now that the book is destined to be on the bestseller list, McCarthy's next book is going to be some ... argh, I can't think of the proper word ... cookie cutter garbage designed to sell books, ala Danielle Steele (is that the right name?).

Indeed, it is a shame, I am enjoying it, though. But, the sad thing is, his sales are going to go through the roof...and still, no one is going to read it. It's just going to languish with every other Oprah attempt to make Americans read good book. Seriously, I saw the Oprah editions of "East of Eden" and "Ana Karenina". I know they became momentary bestsellers, but I bet you go on the street and not only would no one be able to tell you who wrote them, I'd be surprised if anyone knew that they were books. That's the real tragedy, some one as smart as Oprah think consumer capitalism can save people.....it can't. It's just soooooo easy to buy the book and think you've accomplished something. No one ever thinks to read it.

considering your aversion to Oprah's Book Club--which is understandable--that is too funny.
