darkelf105I have read the newest Drizzt title.
First things first, Drizzt does indeed have a magic, bell-bedecked unicorn and it is no joke. The wizards in Silvery Moon made it for him? Because he saved the world, again? And I mean that makes perfect sense, because if I saved the world, again, I'd totally want a unicorn with bells, too. Amirite?
Secondly, I really am pretty fond of this one. It might be because the last book was bad. I mean really, really, awful, so this one might be better in comparison? But I actually think that RAS's writing has effing improved? A lot? For him, I mean? There wasn't so much superfluous details and no schizophrenic head jumping. Well, waaaaaaaaaaay less? But I dunno, I am also BLINDED by love for this series. It is the same sort of love that caused the ancient galliae to chop of their manhood for Cybele. Yanno, the kind of love that makes no sense and you don't know how to deal with it, except to buy the new hardcover every effing year, even though you know it be full of disappoint on a grand, grand scale, or cut off your genitals? It's that kinda love? But I will have a second post for this when I've sorta out my feelings more....
And this brings me to my third and last observation. Holy crap RAS, you just had that lady throw a baby off a cliff. And I'm supposed to like her? Sympathize with her? Cause I did, till she threw a baby of a cliff. I mean, there's just no coming back from that...and her new boyfriend Drizzt? I mean, how's he going to react to that? I know you're trying to make him all dark and brooding and dangerous and er, evuler? But really, I only picture that scene from Spider Man 3 where Peter Parker is walking down the street doing his best impression of John Travolta from Saturday Night Fever? You know the scene where he swaggers and shoots people with finger guns and has his hair all in his eyes and his collar's pulled up. And we the audience were supposed to get the visual clue that he was being effected by the venom suit? That scene? Yeah, you're totally doing it with Drizzt, and it's still just as stupid and shallow, so stop. Anyways, before I digress too long and continue to yell at an author who will never see this post, I what I imagine the scene will go like:
Dahlia: Uh, Drizzt, I have something big to tell you. It's like supposed to be a crux moment for my character, and remember you're supposed, yanno, like me and whatnot, but could you please put down the damn eyeliner and listen to me. You look evil and misanthropic enough, really.
Drizzt: But really Dahlia I haven't mussed up my hair enough and leered at enough ladies to let them know I'm evul-ish now, so uh, fine you can tell me, but you have to swear to let me borrow your hat.
Dahlia: Well, I was raped. Which was a stupid plot device, I know, because watching my family get killed and my home burn probably would have fucked me up quite enough without the rape part but because some men can't like get it through their heads that a woman feels and reacts to things the same as a man does, she doesn't need to be raped to screw her up pretty royally. Also, I totally know that normal women don't go all psycho after they're raped, but there you have it. Anyway, my point being is on top that stupidly and insensitively handled rape scene, I, uh, got pregnant by my rapist. And to get back at him, because I'm now emotionally messed up and you're supposed to forgive me for that, because that rape story is such a good set up for my crazy, I threw the baby off a cliff.
Drizzt: Well crap. I mean, I can see you not wanting the baby, but, like couldn't you have just left it with some well-meaning folks in the woods or something? Or just terminated the pregnancy? Or like decided to have the baby and then leave to get stronger so you could protect it from its evil father and that would have made you, like, an awesome character? Did it not occur to you that throwing babies from cliffs is like something readers can't recover from. Because like, every time you think "Damn, I really like Dahlia, you then immediately think, wut? She threw a baby of off a cliff!!!"
Dahlia: Well, I feel bad about it and stuff...and I do have a really cool hat...
Drizzt: Well yeah and nice boobs for what it's worth. Well, I'm distracted by my own pain and whatnot, so I'll let it slide. Hey, lets buy some hair gel. I want to see if spiking my hair, changing my name to Cloud and carrying a really, really big sword could possibly make me more emo.
