Dec. 9th, 2006 05:51 pmWatched episodes 1-12 of Loveless last night in a giguntic anime marathon. My initial impression is....OMG TEH PRETTY. But beyond that, the story is solid, the animation is very well done, and well, there are enough bishies for everyone! Hurray! I love you Soubi, forget Ritsuka and call ME! I am however, a little concerned that I am not as freaked out about the twenty-year-old stalking the sixth grader thing. In fact, much to my prudish surprise, I find it quite funny. In an animated, safe, no correlation whatsoever to real life, way. I think I would be more grossed out if Soubi were A) waaaay older than twenty and B) Ritsuka was a girl. And if they weren't bishies. Which I guess says about me is: child molestation is okay in my book if you're both pretty and a little messed up in the head. I am a very shallow individual. However, I did like how the trauma that is grade school is caught. I remember that horrible rush of feelings, and the confusion and the death by emotional fire. I am glad that I remember that, but also that I totally grew out of it. I'm emo on purpose now. It's much better when you have control :). Tonight I watch Tactics. I hope it's as cute as the manga. Oh and I finish Gankutsuou. And start the first Godstalk book.
I finished Melusine and am a two-thirds of the way done with its sequel, The Virtu. I must say, these are some of the best books I have ever read that aren't "canon" (as in I picked them up on my own, not because they were on a list of things that one SHOULD read, or that had made a list of what is considered the BEST by a large number of people....so no I don't consider Mildmay in the same way as Ged from Earthsea, but then again, Mildmay is as much alive as Ged, so I guess it doesn't matter that Monette isn't in the same league as LeGuin), and as someone who loves character driven stories, and characters that are kinda hard to love, well, this is it baby. The interaction of the characters in this series is as great as that in Saiyuki, and that is saying something as Saiyuki is one of the best examples of character driven writing I have ever encountered. I love when the characters are so well written that even the way the bounce of each other, they way they love and hate each other becomes almost more important than what is going on in the actual story. Sanzo has a rival in my heart.....Mildmay might be just as cool. It's a tough call. And Felix. Wow. I wanted to like Felix, really, I did. But wow. You know though, I like stories about redemption and that's what Melusine and The Virtu are about, redemption through love and hardship, trial by fire. Felix is such an asshole. But he so freaking VULNERABLE as a character that it's hard not to feel....something for him. And I love that when he shines, it's because of Mildmay. Sarah Monette writes for an intelligent audience and doesn't forgive laxness. She has a complicated world (Melusine is probably the coolest city I have read about outside of Waterdeep and Paris from the Count of Monte Cristo) and the terms and vocabulary to go with it. And she doesn't waste time with a glossary. She writes from the first person POV from both Felix AND Mildmay and they way she blends their narratives is so seemless, so fluid, that it adds a whole differnt dimension to her story. And wow, her characters. These aren't just pretty men (though they are and Felix could have been lifted straight from my yaoi collection) but broken, shattered, and corrupted, and yet.....they have those moments. Great, great novels. I am just sorry that I don't think they will be up the alley of anyone else I know. Oh well, if you are reading this and bored, read Melusine. Give it a chance. You'll be glad you did.
